The South East Europe region (SEE) has significant renewable energy potential as well as the potential for balancing electricity via pumped storage which could be realised through additional investment and regional cooperation. This high potential is in contrast with the significant amount of investment currently planned in fossil fuel based electricity generation, in particular coal. The project covers Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
The overall objective of the planned project is to encourage countries to choose an energy policy which is conducive to long term decarbonisation in the electricity sector. The specific objectives are the following:
- to prepare the necessary technical analysis which can be used to influence decision-makers to revisit decisions on current energy policies;
- to promote synergies and cooperation in the region through a common regional decarbonisation scenario and the organisation of regional workshops;
- to enhance the capacity of – policy makers, transmission system operators (TSO) members, Regulators and local Think Tanks in the field of renewable energy deployment and transmission network planning issues in the SEE region.
